On the morning of September 22, 2016 local time, after holding talks, Premier Li Keqiang met the press together with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada at the Parliament Building in Ottawa.

The Chinese Premier and Canadian Prime Minister briefed on the outcomes of their talks respectively and spoke positively of the frank, in-depth and fruitful talks.

Li Keqiang noted that during his visit this time, the annual dialogue mechanism between Chinese Premier and Canadian Prime Minister was officially launched, marking that China-Canada relations are moving towards a new stage. As China and Canada share broad common interests and sound cooperation foundation, the development of bilateral relations is in the interests of both Chinese and Canadian peoples as well as world peace, stability and prosperity.

Li Keqiang pointed out that both sides agreed to strengthen exchanges at all levels and in multiple mechanisms, bring the role of China-Canada Economic and Financial Strategic Dialogue, annual meeting between Foreign Ministers, high-level dialogues on national security and rule of law and other mechanisms into full play, enhance communication and understanding, and properly resolve problems and differences. Both sides reached consensus on initiating a feasibility study on the China-Canada free trade zone, canola trade and other issues and agreed to together push forward cooperation in such sectors as finance, people-to-people and cultural exchanges, tourism, law-enforcement and local affairs.

Li Keqiang stressed that it is normal for China and Canada, two countries with different cultural backgrounds, national conditions and in different development stages, to have disputes on certain issues, but it should be realized that the common interests between the two sides far outweigh differences. Both sides should ensure a sustained, healthy and stable development of bilateral relations by firmly staying on the general direction of bilateral relationship, respecting each other and seeking common grounds while reserving differences.

Justin Trudeau expressed that Canada-China relations, with tremendous potential, are developing in a steady manner. A series of positive results have been scored from the annual meeting between Canadian Prime Minister and Chinese Premier. It is in line with the common interests of both sides to insist on mutual respect, enhance high-level contacts and maintain stable relations. Canada and China can, by assuming an attitude of sincere cooperation, further deepen mutually beneficial and practical cooperation, reinforce and improve trade relationship and resolve the challenges they encounter. It will not only benefit the two peoples, but also set an example for the healthy development of world trade.
