Xi Jinping Meets with Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany

On September 5, 2016, President Xi Jinping met in Hangzhou with Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, who was in China to attend the G20 Summit.

Xi Jinping stressed that China and Germany are all-round strategic partners. As the world situation is undergoing profound and complicated changes at present, all parties should make joint efforts to cope with the challenges and follow the path of win-win cooperation. Both countries should consolidate the foundation of mutual trust, maintain high-level exchanges and conduct in-depth communication on major issues of common concern in a timely manner. We should enrich the connotation of cooperation between the two countries, well implement reached consensus and promote innovation cooperation. The two sides should also expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges and take the Year of China-Germany Youth Exchange as an opportunity to extend cooperation in such fields as education, science and technology, culture, health, tourism, and innovation and entrepreneurship of youth. The two countries should strengthen multilateral communication and coordination to make positive contributions to world peace, stability and development. China will not change its stance of firmly supporting the European integration process, and believes that Europe is capable of and wise enough to face the challenges.

Xi Jinping pointed out that through joint efforts of all parties, the G20 Hangzhou Summit this year has achieved a complete success with positive results. Next year, Germany will take over the G20 presidency. China appreciates that Germany is willing to continue to set innovation, structural reform, development, the digital economy and others as major topics for next year's summit to ensure the continuity of the agendas and outcomes. The Chinese side stands ready to, together with Germany, maintain close communication and coordination so as to push the G20 Hamburg Summit for success.

Angela Merkel congratulated China on the success of the G20 Hangzhou Summit, and expressed that the theme and results of the Hangzhou Summit are echoed by the vision of the Hamburg Summit hosted by Germany next year. It is hoped that China would support Germany to prepare for the Hamburg Summit. The German side is willing to, together with China, keep close high-level communication, strengthen cooperation in economy and trade, investment and development as well as deepen people-to-people and cultural exchanges. Germany is devoted to pushing for constant development of Europe-China relations.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Yang Jiechi and others were present at the meeting.
