On June 11, 2025, when attending a reception in Changsha marking the 25th anniversary of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had an exchange with Gambian agribusiness entrepreneur Musa Baldeh, who was attending the event as part of the Gambian delegation.
Musa Baldeh shared the story of how the introduction of Yuan Longping's hybrid rice technology had led to a significant increase in rice yields. With the assistance of Chinese agricultural experts in Africa, he not only lifted himself out of poverty and changed his own destiny, but also helped his hometown overcome hunger, and will further contribute to Africa's efforts to overcome the predicament of food shortages. This time, he made a special trip to Changsha with Gambian rice to pay tribute to and express his gratitude to Mr. Yuan Longping. He expressed the hope to learn more about China's agricultural technologies and modernization experience, so as to advance deeper and broader cooperation between Gambia and China.
Wang Yi told Musa Baldeh that his success story is another inspiring chapter in China-Africa friendship and a vivid example of China-Africa cooperation. One of China's key goals in developing friendships with African countries is to bring tangible benefits to the ordinary African people. China will continue to uphold the principle of pursuing greater good and shared interests put forth by President Xi Jinping, and will remain committed to a people-centered approach in Africa by doing more good and practical things for the benefit of the African people.
Wang Yi said that the more success stories like Musa Baldeh's emerge, the greater the strength of China-Africa friendship will be, and the brighter the prospects for Africa's independent development and a better life for African people.
