On December 18, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had separate phone calls with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn and Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow. Both the Cambodian side and the Thai side briefed Wang Yi on the latest developments regarding the border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand and expressed their willingness to de-escalate tensions and cease fire.
Wang Yi said that as a friend and close neighbor of both Cambodia and Thailand, China least wants to see the two countries engage in military conflict and is deeply saddened by the civilian casualties caused by the conflict. The intensity of this round of conflict has far exceeded that of previous ones, and its continuation is detrimental to both sides and undermines the unity of ASEAN. The pressing task now is to make a decisive move, cease fire as soon as possible, prevent further losses and rebuild mutual trust.
Wang Yi said that China has adhered to promoting peace talks and upheld a fair and impartial position on the border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, and supports ASEAN's mediation efforts. The Chinese Foreign Ministry's Special Envoy for Asian Affairs has started a shuttle-diplomacy trip to Cambodia and Thailand for communication. China will continue to bridge the two sides and play a constructive role in promoting the restoration of peace between Cambodia and Thailand. Wang Yi expressed the hope that the two countries will take effective measures to ensure the safety of Chinese projects and personnel, and stay vigilant against anyone who attempts to spread false information and smear China's friendly relations with the two countries.
Prak Sokhonn and Sihasak Phuangketkeow highly appreciated China's objective and just position in mediating and promoting peace talks, welcomed the Chinese Special Envoy's shuttle mediation, and expected China to play a more important role in helping de-escalate tensions and rebuild peace.
