On September 8, 2022, Director-General of the Department of North American and Oceanian Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Yang Tao lodged solemn representations with the US Embassy in China on US cyberattacks and theft against China's Northwestern Polytechnical University.

Yang Tao pointed out that China’s National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center and cybersecurity company 360 recently released investigation reports respectively, exposing the cyberattacks conducted by an office under the US National Security Agency against China's Northwestern Polytechnical University. The relevant facts are clear, and the evidence is strong and compelling. Yang stressed that this is not the first time the US government has carried out such attacks to steal sensitive information from Chinese institutions, which has seriously infringed on the technical secrets of relevant Chinese institutions, and gravely undermined the information security of China's critical infrastructure, institutions and individuals. The US must stop such acts immediately.
