On September 26, 2023, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met in Beijing with former Secretary of the Treasury of the United States and Chairman of the Paulson Institute Henry M. Paulson, Jr. and his delegation.
Wang Yi appreciated Henry M. Paulson, Jr.'s long-term commitment to promoting the development of China-U.S. relations, keeping to an objective and rational attitude, and sending a positive and practical message. Wang Yi expressed his hope that Henry M. Paulson, Jr. and the Paulson Institute will continue to play a constructive role in restoring China-U.S. relations.
Wang Yi said that a souring China-U.S. relationship does not meet the interests of the two peoples, the expectation of the international community, or the development trend of the times. Reversing the course will not get anywhere, and backpedaling on history will only harm oneself. China's policy toward the United States remains stable and consistent. The principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation put forth by President Xi Jinping have shown a clear direction and provided fundamental guidance for China-U.S. relations. Wang Yi expressed his hope that the U.S. will return to the rational and pragmatic track in its China policy, take concrete actions to lengthen the positive list and shorten the negative list, and work with China to explore ways of peaceful coexistence as two major countries.
Henry M. Paulson, Jr., among others, welcomed the recent resumption and maintenance of dialogue between the United States and China. The two sides should indeed find the right way to get along with each other, build mutual trust, push for the steady improvement of U.S.-China relations, and explore the expansion of cooperation in such fields concerning common interests as economy, finance, agriculture and response to climate change. Henry M. Paulson, Jr., among others, expressed confidence in the future of the Chinese economy and U.S.-China relations, and said that the Paulson Institute will continue to play a positive role in strengthening communication and exchanges between the United States and China, and stands ready to work with China to promote the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai to yield positive outcomes and help the Global South countries better respond to climate change.
