On October 20, 2023, Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu attended and addressed the commemorative event hosted by the U.S. Embassy in China to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the U.S. Liaison Office in China upon invitation.

Ma Zhaoxu said that 50 years ago, China and the United States announced the establishment of an ambassadorial-level liaison office in each other's country. During the crucial period from the ice-breaking visit to the establishment of diplomatic relations, the liaison offices in China and the United States did a great number of effective work, built a special bridge between the two countries, and played an irreplaceable important role in the normalization of China-U.S. relations.

Ma Zhaoxu noted that one can acquire new knowledge by constantly reviewing the past. Fifty years on, China, the United States, and China-U.S. relations have all undergone great changes, but the historical logic of peaceful coexistence between China and the United States has not changed, the fundamental aspiration of the two peoples for exchanges and cooperation has not changed, nor has the international community's shared expectation of steady development of China-U.S. relations changed. Today, China-U.S. relations are in another crucial period. The two sides should act with a great sense of responsibility to history, the world and the people, focus on common interests, show political courage, demonstrate political wisdom, properly manage differences, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and promote people-to-people friendship, so as to bring China-U.S. relations back to the right track of development.

Ma Zhaoxu emphasized that President Xi Jinping has pointed out on many occasions, "We have a thousand reasons to make the China-U.S. relationship a success, and none whatsoever to wreck it." China will follow the fundamental guidance of the three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation put forth by President Xi Jinping to be committed to stabilizing, improving and growing China-U.S. relations. The two sides should jointly draw experience and inspiration from history, and make relentless efforts to ensure the stability, improvement and growth of China-U.S. relations.
