On the evening of May 5, 2018, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee Yang Jiechi held telephone talks at request with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of the United States (US).
Yang Jiechi expressed that China-US relations are at an important stage at present. Both sides should earnestly implement the important consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump, reinforce exchanges at high level and across various levels, continue keeping close communication on relevant issues such as economy and trade, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, properly handle differences and sensitive issues, and maintain communication and coordination on major international and regional issues, in a bid to promote the forward-looking development of bilateral relations along the right track.
Mike Pompeo expressed that as the two largest economies in the world, the US and China enjoy huge cooperation potential. The US attaches great importance to developing its relations with China and stands ready to, together with China, keep close communication and coordination on the advancement of bilateral relations.
Both sides also exchanged views on some international and regional issues.
