On June 14, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of the United States (US) in Beijing. Both sides jointly met the press after their talks.

When answering questions concerning bilateral relations from the journalists, Wang Yi expressed that we will welcome the 40th anniversary of the establishment of China-US diplomatic relations next year, which will be a crucial node for the development progress of bilateral relations. China stands ready to, together with the US, earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, respect each other, focus on cooperation, manage and control differences, as well as strive to make 2019 the year of increasing mutual trust, expanding exchanges, and deepening cooperation between the two countries.

Wang Yi noted that on the one hand, both sides should tap into and contribute more positive energy to China-US relations through strengthening all-round cooperation, so as to make more new contributions to world peace and development; on the other hand, both sides should properly deal with differences and sensitive issues on the basis of mutual trust, and constantly remove the "barriers" on the development path of bilateral relations. At present, both sides should, in particular, practically reinforce dialogue and communication, and avoid new interferences in bilateral relations, thus ensuring stronger driving force and less resistance for the development of bilateral relations, laying a more solid foundation for the healthy and stable development of China-US relations in the next four decades and opening up broader prospects.
