On June 14, 2018, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee Yang Jiechi met in Beijing with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of the United States (US).
Yang Jiechi expressed that the healthy and stable development of China-US relations not only conforms to the fundamental interests of the two peoples, but is also the general expectation of the international community. It is hoped that the US will work with China to take the common interests of the people of both countries and the whole world as the starting point, take a series of important consensuses reached by President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump at their meeting in Beijing as the guidance, firmly grasp the right direction of the development of bilateral relations, enhance strategic mutual trust, avoid strategic misjudgment, expand practical cooperation on the basis of mutual benefit and reciprocity, and properly handle differences and sensitive issues on the basis of mutual respect, in a bid to promote the forward-looking development and greater progress of bilateral relations along the right track.
Yang Jiechi stressed that the one-China principle is the political foundation of China-US relations, and that China's stance on the Taiwan question is unswerving. The US should abide by the one-China principle and regulations in the three joint communiqués between China and the US, and handle the Taiwan-related issues in a prudent manner.
Yang Jiechi pointed out that the bilateral economic and trade relations are of mutual benefit and win-win results in nature. Both sides should live up to the consensus of recent consultations, adhere to handling bilateral economic and trade issues through dialogues and consultations, and well safeguard the hard-won outcomes from bilateral economic and trade cooperation, so as to ensure that economic and trade cooperation will continue to be the ballast stone and propeller of bilateral relations, and benefit the people of the two countries and all countries in the world.
Mike Pompeo expressed that the expansion of cooperation between the US and China will benefit the two peoples. The US sticks to upholding the one-China policy and stands ready to strengthen cooperation with China, in a bid to make bilateral relations more fruitful.
Mike Pompeo also briefed Yang Jiechi on relevant situation of the summit between the US and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in Singapore. Both sides exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula issue.
