On June 14, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Beijing with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of the United States (US). Both sides jointly met the press after their talks.

When answering a question from the journalist on China-US competition, Wang Yi expressed that it is inevitable for China and the US, two major countries, to encounter some competition, which is also a normal phenomenon in international relations. The key is what kind of attitude both countries hold when viewing the competition. As for China, we believe that the competition between China and the US should be benign and positive with the aim of self-transcendence rather than replacing each other. Both sides should boost cooperation through competition, and create win-win results through cooperation. Only by doing this can the benefits of both countries be truly conformed to, and the due responsibilities that China and the US should shoulder for the world be earnestly fulfilled.
