November 8, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Marise Payne of Australia jointly met the press after the fifth round of China-Australia Diplomatic and Strategic Dialogue in Beijing. Some reporters asked Wang Yi what expectations the Chinese side has for China-United States (US) relations after the US midterm election.

Wang Yi expressed that the US midterm election is the internal affairs of the US, and China has never interfered in other countries' internal affairs.

Wang Yi said that the essence of China-US relations is mutual benefit and win-win results. As China and the US are the world's two major markets and two permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, the need for bilateral cooperation is far greater than the differences. The necessity and long-term nature of cooperation also transcends the differences in political views of the political parties and the changes in their respective domestic situation. China and the US will usher in the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius said, "When reaching forty, one should no longer have any doubts." The experience and lessons over the past 40 years are enough to prove that for China and the US, cooperation will deliver win-win results, whereas confrontation will end up with a loss for both sides. The ups and downs over the past 40 years have warned us that the more complicated the situation is, the more we must be clear-headed, and the more the contradictions are, the more we must stay focused.

Wang Yi expressed that President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump will hold the meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Argentina as scheduled. The Chinese side is willing to make concerted efforts with the US side to eliminate interference, accumulate mutual trust, respect each other, meet each other halfway and make all preparations for the meeting, in a bid to make this important meeting define the direction of and inject impetus into the current China-US relations and even bilateral relations in the coming period.
