Updated: November 08, 2018 09:40

On November 8, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger of the United States (US) in Beijing.

Wang Yi expressed that China and the US are about to embrace the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. The practice over the past four decades has proved that China and the US enjoy far more common interests than differences, and cooperation is the only right choice for the two countries. Facing some negative voices in the US about its policy towards China, we advocate the establishment of the China-US relations featuring non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, which is the basic experience summarized by both sides from the exchanges over the past 40 years, as well as the direction towards which both sides should make joint efforts. As for the current economic and trade dispute between the two countries, we think it should be and can be properly solved through dialogue on an equal footing. Since economies of China and the US enjoy high complementarities, the enhancement of bilateral cooperation can not only provide a bigger market and greater growth impetus for the US, but also create favorable external conditions for China's development. Both sides should achieve mutual benefit and win-win results through making bigger the cake of China-US economic and trade cooperation.

Henry Kissinger expressed that I do not agree with the view of considering China as an opponent. Given that the US and China are both important major countries, relations between the US and China are of great importance to the two countries as well as the world. It is necessary for both sides to view bilateral relations from a broader perspective, and set the basic principles for the long-term and stable development of US-China relations. The enhancement of bilateral cooperation is conducive to coping with the complicated issues facing the world today. I agreed that both sides should properly control and well resolve the specific disputes between the US and China through dialogues.
