On July 5, 2019, Vice Foreign Minister Luo Zhaohui held telephone talks at request with Special Representative for North Korea of the Department of State Stephen Biegun of the United States (US). The two sides exchanged views on the current situation on the Korean Peninsula and on advancing the political settlement process of the Korean Peninsula issue. Stephen Biegun briefed on the recent meeting between leaders of the US and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) in Panmunjom, and noted that the US side is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with the Chinese side on the Korean Peninsula issue. Luo Zhaohui stressed that the recent benign interactions among relevant parties on the Korean Peninsula affairs are of great significance in promoting the peace talks. The Chinese side supports contact and dialogue between the US and the DPRK, and hopes that both sides will meet each other half way to resume working-level consultations as soon as possible in accordance with the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries.
