Wang Yi Proposes that the Permanent Members of the United Nations (UN) Security Council Should Be Role Models in Five Areas

On September 26, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi chaired a work luncheon between Foreign Ministers of permanent members of the United Nations (UN) Security Council and UN Secretary-General at the Chinese Permanent Mission to the UN. Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian of France, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov of Russia, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo of the United States, Minister of State for the Commonwealth and the United Nations of the United Kingdom Lord Tariq Ahmad, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres attended the event. The participating parties exchanged in-depth views on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the UN, regional hotspot issues and cooperation among the five permanent members.

   

Wang Yi expressed, the UN Charter gives the five permanent members of the UN Security Council special positions and people of all countries also hold special expectations for us. The five permanent members should be aware of their great responsibility, work hand in hand, and commit themselves to world peace and security. We should not only safeguard the rightful interests of our own country, but also promote the common interests of the international community.

   

Wang Yi stressed, in the face of such a complex and ever-changing world, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council should be role models in abiding by international law and rules for the sake of lasting peace and stability in the world; supporting multilateralism in order to deal with global challenges effectively; increasing development assistance so as to help achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; strengthening unity and coordination to forge consensus in international cooperation; and safeguarding the status of the UN and implementing the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

Wang Yi emphasized, with great power comes great responsibility. The Chinese side is willing to maintain close communication and cooperation with other permanent members of the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General, shoulder the due responsibility of well handling global hotspot issues, and make due contributions to the promotion of world peace and prosperity.
