Director-General of the Department of Treaty and Law of the Foreign Ministry Jia Guide Attends the "International Law Week" of the 74th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly

From October 28 to November 1, 2019, Director-General of the Department of Treaty and Law of the Foreign Ministry Jia Guide attended the "International Law Week" of the 74th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly at the UN headquarters in New York, and participated in the UN General Assembly's review of the report of the International Court of Justice and the UN General Assembly Sixth Committee's review of the various topics of the International Law Commission, and made remarks. He stressed, under the current background of severe impact on multilateralism and international law, relevant UN agencies should play a greater role in safeguarding and promoting international law and carrying forward international fairness and justice, and the Chinese side is willing to join efforts with all parties to safeguard the international system with the UN as the core as well as the international order with international law as its basis.

On the sidelines of meeting, Jia Guide attended the consultation of Directors-General (Legal Advisors) of the Departments of Treaty and Law of the Foreign Ministries of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and that of the BRICS countries respectively, and had in-depth exchanges of views on the development of their respective domestic laws, the legal work of the UN, global governance and other topics on international law, enhancing understanding and consensus.

Jia Guide also attended the informal meeting of Directors-General of the Departments of Treaty and Law of the Foreign Ministries of relevant countries, met with UN Under-Secretary-General and Legal Counsel Miguel de Serpa Soares and Assistant Secretary-General for Legal Affairs Stephen Mathias, and held informal consultations with the Legal Advisers of Foreign Ministries of over ten countries including Germany, the Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland as well as the Legal Adviser of the International Committee of the Red Cross, having in-depth exchanges of views on important topics in such fields as strengthening legal cooperation with the UN, international humanitarian law, maritime law and polar regions.
