On April 29, 2026, Vice President Han Zheng met separately in Beijing with President of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Annalena Baerbock and Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong.

When meeting with Annalena Baerbock, Han Zheng stated that the current international landscape is a complex mix of turbulence and change, and the international system with the UN at its core is facing severe shocks. In September of last year, President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Governance Initiative, sending a clear signal of China’s firm defense of the UN’s authority and central role, which has received broad support from the international community. China is willing to take the implementation of the Global Governance Initiative as an opportunity to continuously deepen cooperation with the UN, support the UNGA in adhering to true multilateralism, prioritizing development and pursuing integrity and innovation, jointly safeguard world peace and security, and promote development and prosperity.

Annalena Baerbock stated that China is a key partner of the UN and an important pillar of multilateralism, adding that she appreciates the important initiative put forward by President Xi Jinping and stands ready to deepen cooperation with China to revitalize multilateralism and jointly promote global peace and development.

When meeting with Penny Wong, Han Zheng stated China-Australia relations have made significant progress over the past decade or so, but also experienced ups and downs. In recent years, President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have held multiple meetings and reached important common understandings, providing strategic guidance for the continued forward development of bilateral relations and driving tangible results in exchanges and cooperation across various fields. China and Australia's adherence to treating each other as equals, seeking common ground while reserving differences, and mutually beneficial cooperation, conforms to the fundamental interests of both sides. China stands ready to work with Australia to implement the important common understandings reached by the leaders of both countries, hold on to the right direction for bilateral ties, strengthen alignment of development strategies, enhance dialogue and exchanges, and build a more mature, stable and fruitful China-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership.

Penny Wong stated that currently Australia-China relations have maintained a sound growth momentum, with steady progress in mutually beneficial cooperation. Australia highly values its ties with China and will enhance communication and dialogue, expand pragmatic cooperation, and advance sustained development of bilateral relations.
