On July 9, 2019, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee Yang Jiechi made clear the Chinese side’s solemn position of firmly opposing the United States (US) Department of State’s approval of arms sale worth 2.22 billion US dollars to Taiwan while meeting with President of Russian International Affairs Council and former Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov of Russia.
Yang Jiechi said, Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory. The US arms sale to Taiwan gravely violates the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, harms China's sovereignty and security interests, and severely damages cross-straits peace and stability. The Chinese side deplores and resolutely opposes it. We have lodged stern representations with the US side.
Yang Jiechi stressed, the Taiwan question is purely China’s internal affairs and allows no interference from the outside. The Chinese government’s and people’s resolve and determination to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity are unwavering. The Chinese side urges the US side to fully recognize the damages of the US arms sale to Taiwan, abide by the one-China principle and the three joint communiques, immediately correct the mistake, withdraw the planned arms sale and stop arms sale to and sever military ties with Taiwan to avoid further damages to China-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
