On May 20 and May 21, 2021, Special Envoy of the Chinese Government on the Middle East Issue Zhai Jun had separate phone conversations with the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland and Russian Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov on the situation in Palestine and Israel.
Zhai Jun elaborated on the principled stance of China on the situation in Palestine and Israel, introduced the important view and proposition put forward by State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and China's mediation efforts to cause the de-escalation of the conflict, and stressed that China welcomes the ceasefire between Palestine and Israel in conflict and hopes the two sides to restart peace talks as soon as possible on the basis of the "two-state solution". China will continue to actively urge peace talks, provide humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian side and support the reconstruction of Gaza, calling on the international community to play a greater role in this regard.
Wennesland and Bogdanov highly appreciated State Councilor Wang Yi for his proposition and China for its work to facilitate the easing of the situation in Palestine and Israel. Wennesland said, China's recent series of diplomatic actions fully reflect its consistent support for the Palestinian cause and the United Nations and its firm commitment to the "two-state solution", which is in line with the mainstream will of the international community and will help promote the settlement of the Palestinian question. Bogdanov said, Russia and China have highly aligned positions on the Palestinian question, and Russia is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with China for resolving the question fundamentally and maintaining lasting peace and stability in the region.
