On the evening of May 30, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Hong Kong with Beninese Foreign Minister Shegun Adjadi Bakari, who attended the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed).

Wang Yi congratulated Benin on becoming a founding member of the IOMed, and stated that the establishment of the IOMed responds to the common concerns of all countries in seeking peace, promoting stability and pursuing development, conforms to the prevailing trend of win-win cooperation, and is in line with the peace philosophy cherished by both China and Benin. It will provide a new path for the international dispute settlement mechanism and promote more just and equitable global governance.

Wang Yi said, Benin is China's strategic partner in Africa. The important common understandings reached between President Xi Jinping and President Patrice Athanase Guillaume Talon as well as the various measures proposed at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation are being steadily implemented. The political mutual trust between the two countries has deepened continuously, and cooperation in various fields has yielded fruitful results. China is ready to work with Benin to deliver on the ten partnership actions for China and Africa to jointly advance modernization, accelerate the process of common development, and continuously promote greater development of China-Benin strategic partnership.

Shegun Adjadi Bakari said, Benin is honored to be one of the first signatories of the IOMed, which stems from the strategic partnership between Benin and China. Both sides share similar philosophies, uphold multilateralism, and advocate for dialogue and consultation to resolve conflicts and disputes. Benin will accelerate the ratification of the Convention and strive for the prompt operation of the IOMed to bring more stability to the world, which is of great significance to the African continent. China is a great friend and a reliable and important partner of Benin. Benin will always stand with China and is ready to work with China to jointly follow through on the important common understandings reached by the leaders of the two countries and promote the continuous development of bilateral relations.
