The International Community Continues to Extend Condolences to China over the Ludian Earthquake in Yunnan

From August 4 to 5, 2014, a number of foreign leaders respectively sent messages or letters to President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang, extending condolences and support to the Chinese government and people over the Ludian earthquake in Yunnan Province.

In their messages, President Choummaly Saygnasone and Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong of Laos said that they believe under the staunch leadership, care and help of the Party, the central government and local governments of China, people in the earthquake-hit areas are bound to be able to get back to normal life soon.

General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam Nguyen Phu Trong, President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung of Viet Nam said in their joint message that they believe under the leadership of the Party and the government of China, people in the disaster area will surely be able to overcome difficulties and get back to normal production and life as soon as possible.

In his letter, President U Thein Sein of Myanmar conveyed his profound condolences and sympathies and believed that people in the quake-stricken areas will get back to normal life soon.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand in their messages extended deep condolences and sympathies over the tragedy which caused heavy casualties and losses.

President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore said that they believe people in Yunnan will get through the difficulties with gritty will and determination, and Singapore is willing to offer help at any time.

President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan, in his letter, extended profound condolences to the victims and expressed deep sympathies to the injured as well as the bereaved families.

In his message, President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania said that the government and people of Tanzania will join hands with the bereaved families, people in the quake-hit areas and Chinese people to get through the difficult times.

In their messages, President Joachim Gauck and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany wished the injured would recover soon and said that the German government is willing to extend support to help China cope with the earthquake rescue and relief work.

In his letter, President Aleksandr Lukashenko of Belarus said that he believes the Chinese people will turn grief into strength and overcome all the difficulties.

Besides, foreign leaders including President Macky Sall of Senegal, Prime Minister Moulaye Ould Mohamed Laghdaf of Mauritania, Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said of Oman, Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Mininter Abdallah bin Nasir bin Khalifa Al Thani of Qatar, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, President Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom of Maldives, President Rosen Plevneliev of Bulgaria, Prime Minister Antonios Samaras of Greece and Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic of Serbia, countries including Indonesia, Brunei, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Canada, New Zealand, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Uruguay, Grenada, Bolivia, the UK, France, the Netherlands, Finland and Spain, and international and regional organizations including the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the European External Action Service, have also expressed condolences to China in different ways.
