On June 7, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Beijing with Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa of Uruguay.

Wang Yi expressed that Uruguay is China’s important cooperative partner in Latin America. China-Uruguay relations maintain long-term and steady development. China stands ready to strengthen exchanges with Uruguay at all levels, dovetail development strategies, expand mutually beneficial cooperation in fields including trade, production capacity, agriculture and animal husbandry, infrastructure and clean energy, broaden people-to-people and cultural exchanges, conduct closer multilateral coordination and constantly enrich the strategic connotations of bilateral relations.

Wang Yi stressed that though at present, some of the Latin American countries encounter temporary difficulties in development, China harbors full confidence in Latin America’s development prospects. China-Latin America relations transcend ideological factors and friendship with China is a consensus among Latin American governments, peoples and all circles of the society. Changes of situation in Latin America won’t affect the sound momentum of deepening cooperation between China and Latin America. We are optimistic about the prospects of China-Latin America relations.

Rodolfo Nin Novoa noted that the Uruguayan government makes developing relations with China a diplomatic priority all the time. Uruguay will adhere to the One-China principle as always, stands ready to strengthen high-level exchanges with China, and expects China to take an active part in Uruguay’s economic and social construction and continuously expand bilateral cooperation in areas such as agriculture and infrastructure. Uruguay is willing to enhance bilateral coordination in international affairs, actively devote itself to overall Latin America-China cooperation and Mercosur’s relations with China, and work with China to push for continuous development of Latin America-China relations.
