On January 22, 2018 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Santiago with Secretary of Foreign Affairs Luis Videgaray Caso of Mexico, who was attending the Second Ministerial Meeting of the Forum of China and Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
Wang Yi expressed that last September, President Xi Jinping and President Enrique Peña Nieto held the seventh meeting on the sideline of the Dialogue of Emerging Market and Developing Countries in Xiamen, reached important consensus and further promoted cooperation between the two countries, showing the strategic significance and the high level of China-Mexico relations. Mexico has been an important pivot of the Maritime Silk Road in history, and Latin America is also a natural extension of the "Belt and Road". China appreciates Mexico for supporting the "Belt and Road" initiative, and is willing to take this as an opportunity to further deepen bilateral practical cooperation. China is ready to further enhance strategic communication and coordination with Mexico, so as to boost regional and world peace and development with stability of China-Mexico relations.
Luis Videgaray Caso said that Mexico thanked China for its long-term assistance to the economic and social development of Mexico. China provided assistance in a timely manner after last year's earthquake in Mexico, just like "sending firewood in a snowy winter". Mexico-China relations have enjoyed smooth development in recent years, which is inseparable from the friendship between the two heads of state and the friendly feelings between the two peoples. As the current international situation is full of uncertainties, both Mexico and China should maintain coordination and cooperation in multilateral affairs, and jointly deal with climate change and other challenges. Mexico thanks China for bringing the "Belt and Road" initiative in the China-CELAC Forum, and is ready to participate more deeply in the process of the joint construction of the "Belt and Road" by China and Latin America.
