On May 20, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Roberto Ampuero Espinoza of Chile on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Buenos Aires.

Wang Yi expressed that Chile is a friendly country of China in Latin America. Although the two countries are far away from each other, the concept of openness and the free trade agreement have tightly connected us together. In recent years, bilateral economic and trade cooperation has enjoyed rapid growth, bringing tangible benefits to the two peoples. Appreciating the Chilean government for firmly committing to developing its relations with China, the Chinese side is willing to align the "Belt and Road" initiative with Chile's 2025 investment program, push forward mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas including infrastructure and connectivity, and enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges, so as to achieve common development and prosperity. It is hoped that Chile will continue playing an active and demonstration role in the process of the joint construction of the "Belt and Road" by China and Latin America. China is full of confidence in and expectation on the prospects of China-Chile comprehensive strategic partnership.

Roberto Ampuero Espinoza expressed that Chile and China maintain a sound relationship. Chile values China's stance on safeguarding the free trade, and building an open world economy, which is also an important footstone of the country's foreign policy. The Chilean side firmly upholds the one-China principle, and appreciates China's efforts in maintaining the stability in the South China Sea, and promoting the political settlement of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. Chile hopes to, together with China, strengthen high-level exchanges, constantly expand bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation, and enhance exchanges and cooperation in culture, education and other fields. The Chilean side highly values and actively supports the "Belt and Road" initiative, and hopes the "Belt and Road" will extend to Latin America. Chinese enterprises are welcome to conduct investment and cooperation in Chile. Chile is willing to be the gateway for China to enter Latin America.
