On the evening of October 13, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held telephone talks with Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray of Mexico at request.

Briefing Wang Yi on the situation of signing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, Luis Videgaray said that Mexico is an independent sovereign country, and that relevant agreement will neither affect exchanges between Mexico and China in any aspect nor limit Mexico-China trade, investment and political relations. China is a trustworthy partner of Mexico. The Mexican side stands ready to further develop bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership.

Wang Yi noted that China and Mexico, as comprehensive strategic partners, have consistently understood each other, trusted each other and supported each other on major issues. Any bilateral or multilateral free trade agreement should not target at any third party, should not limit legitimate rights and interests of other members, still less should it pursue exclusionism. Both China and Mexico are emerging market economies and the two sides should jointly defend multilateralism and safeguard the free trade system.
