Li Keqiang Meets with President Desi Bouterse of Suriname

On the afternoon of November 27, 2019, Premier Li Keqiang met at the Great Hall of the People with President Desi Bouterse of Suriname, who was paying a state visit to China.

Li Keqiang expressed, China and Suriname are tens of thousands of miles apart from each other, but the two peoples enjoy a profound friendship. For more than 40 years after establishing diplomatic relations, China-Suriname relations have seen sound and stable development. President Xi Jinping and Mr. President will hold talks to elevate bilateral relations to new highs. China is willing to continue working with the Surinamese side to strengthen political mutual trust, synergize development strategies, advance practical cooperation, expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges and better achieve mutual benefit and win-win results on the basis of mutual respect and equal treatment.

Li Keqiang pointed out, the Chinese side understands the concerns of Caribbean countries on climate change. China's own development calls for tackling climate change and promoting continuous environmental improvement. China will continue to improve the environment while maintaining economic growth in a reasonable range. With unremitting efforts, China is able to fulfill this year's task of energy conservation and emissions reduction, and is also confident of achieving the target of reducing emissions set in the 13th Five-Year Plan on schedule. The Chinese side is willing to work with all parties to promote effective implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Desi Bouterse said, Suriname and China enjoy a time-honored friendship. Over the past 70 years, China has made remarkable development achievements and contributed to other countries' development. The Surinamese side firmly upholds the One China policy and thanks the Chinese side for its selfless help to the Surinamese side. The Surinamese side stands ready to advance cooperation with the Chinese side in various fields on the basis of equality and mutual benefit, and strengthen communication and coordination on international issues such as coping with climate change, so as to usher in a new era of bilateral relations.
