On December 11, 2020, Vice Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang attended upon invitation the reception marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China-Chile diplomatic ties held by the Embassy of Chile in China.

Zheng Zeguang, in his speech, spoke positively of the historic development of diplomatic ties between China and Chile in the past 50 years since the establishment of such ties. He said that Chile was the first Latin American country to establish diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of China. Since then, the two countries have continued to deepen mutual political trust, expand practical cooperation, increase people-to-people exchanges, making the China-Chile relations the exemplary model of unity and cooperation between China and Latin American and Caribbean countries. In February this year, President Xi Jinping and President Sebastián Piñera Echenique spoke over phone and exchanged messages to exchange in-depth views on enhancing all-round cooperation including joint anti-pandemic response, charting the course for future development of the bilateral relations. China is ready to work with Chile to implement the important consensus of the two heads of state, continue to fight against the pandemic together, expand practical cooperation in various fields such as economy, trade and infrastructure construction, further coordinate development strategies, jointly uphold multilateralism and free trade, and promote greater development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

Chilean Ambassador to China Luis Schmidt Montes stated in his speech that in the past 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, the Chile-China relations have seen significant progress and become more mature. Chile appreciates China's valuable support and assistance for its pandemic control. There are huge potential and broad prospects for future cooperation between the two countries. Chile is willing to work with China to deepen cooperation in such fields as pandemic control, economy and trade, astronomy, science and technology and culture, and reinforce multilateral collaboration for common development.
