China Participates in an Oral Proceeding before the International Court of Justice on the Advisory Opinion Concerning Climate Change

On December 3, 2024, Legal Adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Member of the International Law Commission Ambassador Ma Xinmin, on behalf of China, made a statement at the oral proceeding before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the advisory opinion concerning climate change. He elaborated on China's legal views and arguments regarding the obligations of states to address climate change and its adverse effects, and the legal consequences of such actions. He also provided a comprehensive introduction to China's significant progress and achievements in combating climate change.

This marks China's third participation in an oral proceeding before the ICJ on an advisory opinion, following its participation in the 2009 advisory opinion on Kosovo's independence and the 2024 advisory opinion on the occupied Palestinian territory.
