On October 18, 2026, local time, Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić met in Podgorica with Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Milojko Spajić asked Wang Yi to convey his sincere greetings to the Chinese leaders. He said that the warm reception he received during his visit to China for meetings in June this year and today’s visit of the Chinese Foreign Minister both reflect the importance China attaches to Montenegro-China relations. Montenegro and China share a common historical memory and traditional friendship, and both resisted fascism and foreign aggression during World War II. Montenegro highly values China’s status and influence as a major country, appreciates China for curbing the rise in global oil prices with a responsible attitude in the Middle East conflict and helping small and medium-sized countries such as Montenegro tide over the energy crisis, which reflects China’s sense of responsibility as a major country.
Milojko Spajić said that in recent years, Montenegro has achieved sound economic and social development, and Chinese enterprises have helped Montenegro successfully complete the construction of the north-south expressway. The two sides are now cooperating on the restoration of the Tara River Bridge, a project of important historical significance that has brought the two peoples closer and become the best testimony to their traditional friendship. China has always been the most important partner on Montenegro’s development path, and deepening cooperation with China meets the aspirations of the Montenegrin people and enjoys broad public support. Montenegro is ready to continue to march forward shoulder-to-shoulder with China, ensure sound planning of cooperation in tourism, infrastructure, green transition and other fields, and conduct exchanges of governance experience, so as to accelerate the realization of the development and revitalization of both countries. Montenegro welcomes the new consensus reached in the China-EU trade and investment consultation mechanism, believing that strengthening communication and cooperation between Europe and China, as close partners and the world’s two major forces and markets, is conducive to world stability and development.

Wang Yi conveyed the best wishes of the Chinese leaders to Milojko Spajić, stating that China and Montenegro have always been good friends on the path of development and revitalization. The two sides respect and support each other on issues of each other’s core interests and major concerns, which serves as an important guarantee for the sound and steady development of bilateral relations. The 20th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between China and Montenegro is an important year that carries forward the past and ushers in the future. China is ready to work with Montenegro to explore the elevation of the positioning of bilateral relations, continuously deepen exchanges and cooperation in various fields, and become long-term and reliable strategic partners of each other.
Wang Yi said that China and Montenegro share many things in common. They are both nations that are not intimidated by power or violence and firmly defend their own dignity. They jointly won the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War, and should both be on alert against the revival of militarism. They both support and practice multilateralism and oppose the world slipping back to the “law of the jungle.” They both advocate economic globalization, defend free trade, and resist all practices of conservatism and isolationism. They both advocate political settlement of disputes by peaceful means through dialogue. The Tara River Bridge connects the hearts of the two peoples and carries the history and future of bilateral relations. China’s help in restoring the bridge has important historical and social significance. China understands Montenegro’s efforts to join the EU and believes this is not incompatible with Montenegro’s strengthening of relations with China. It is expected that Montenegro will provide new impetus for the sound development of China-EU relations.
