China's Special Envoy to the Middle East Wu Sike Visits Syria

From Oct. 26 to 28, 2011, China's Special Envoy to the Middle East Wu Sike visited Syria. He met respectively with Syrian Vice President Al-Shara and Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem. He had an in-depth exchange of views with them focusing on the current situation in Syria.

Wu said that China pays close attention to the situation in Syria. He said that the highest priority right now is that the related parties of Syria proceed from the interest of Syria and the Syrian people, put an immediate stop to any violent acts and bloodshed and ease up the tension as quickly as possible. The Syrian government should also accelerate implementing reform commitments, launch and promote an inclusive political process with the participation of different parties as early as possible, and respond to the rational expectations and requests of the people. The concerned parties in Syria should participate in this political settlement process in a constructive attitude, resolve disputes through dialogues and find a reform and development path suited to Syria's own national conditions. The international community should respect the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Syria, properly handle the Syrian issue and work together to ease up the Syrian situation and safeguard the peace and stability of the Middle East.

Wu pointed out that China appreciates the positive and constructive role played by the League of Arab States in the Syrian issue. China holds an impartial position on the Syrian issue and is willing to continue to make efforts to promote the early resumption of stability in Syria for the welfare of the Syrian people.

The Syrian side introduced the situation in Syria and the visits by the Ministerial Committee of the League of Arab States. Syria appreciated the position of China on the Syrian issue. Syria expressed the willingness to advance the reform and dialogue process and strive to reach consensus with the League of Arab States on related issues.

Wu also held a press conference at the Chinese Embassy in Syria. He expounded China's views and positions on the Syrian situation and answered the questions raised by Chinese and foreign journalists.
