On December 22, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met at the Great Hall of the People with representatives of President of Palestine Ahmed Majdalani and Nabil Shaath.
After listening to the Palestinian side's introduction to the current Palestinian issue, Wang Yi said that the United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted the resolution yesterday by an overwhelming majority and affirmed that any decisions and actions that alter the status of Jerusalem are null and void. It fully reflects the clear attitude of the international community to adhere to the UN resolution and the international consensus, and also voices the call for speeding up the Middle East peace process.
Wang Yi expressed that as the Palestinian issue is the root cause issue of the Middle East, peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved unless it is solved. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Palestine Partition Plan. Yet the long-cherished wish of Palestine to found a state has not been realized. The international community should deeply reflect upon it and take actions.
Wang Yi addressed that China firmly supports the just cause of the Palestinian people in restoring the legitimate national rights, supports the "two-state solution", and supports an independent Palestinian state that enjoys full sovereignty, with East Jerusalem as its capital and based on the 1967 borders.
Wang Yi put forward four expectations to Palestine against the current changes of situation. The first is to accelerate the promotion of internal reconciliation and form a united force; the second is to continue holding high the banner of peace talks and adhere to solving disputes through dialogue; the third is to give play to the role of the UN as much as possible and make the peace-making efforts more just and legitimate; and the fourth is to constantly gather the strength of peace and amplify the voice of peace.
Wang Yi noted that when holding talks with President Mahmoud Abbas this July, President Xi Jinping put forward a four-point proposal of China to solve the Palestine-Israel issue. China will take it as the guidance to continue making contributions to solving the Palestinian issue at an early date and achieving peace in the Middle East.
Ahmed Majdalani and Nabil Shaath expressed that Palestine will adhere to solving the Palestine-Israel issue through political dialogue. Palestine hopes to innovate international peace-making ways, form a more effective mediation mechanism and activate the peace process of the Middle East, so as to inject new vitality to this end. Palestine thanks China for the long-term and firm support for the just cause of the Palestinian people and speaks highly of the four-point proposal put forward by President Xi Jinping to solve the Palestine-Israel issue. It is believed that it will become the foundation of the international community to promote peace talks in the future. Palestine expects that China will play a greater role in the Middle East affairs.
