On June 10, 2018, President Xi Jinping held talks with President Hassan Rouhani of Iran in Qingdao.
Xi Jinping welcomed Hassan Rouhani’s visit to China and his attendance at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Qingdao Summit. Xi Jinping pointed out that during my state visit to Iran in 2016, China and Iran announced to establish the comprehensive strategic partnership. Over the past two years and more, both sides have enjoyed intensified cooperation and comprehensively implemented the consensus reached by Mr. President and me. Bilateral cooperation in various fields has achieved fruitful results, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges have become increasingly closer. China-Iran relations have the potential for in-depth development. China stands ready to make concerted efforts with Iran to jointly promote bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership for steady and long-term development.
Xi Jinping addressed that China and Iran should take the deepening of political relations as the overall guidance to constantly increase strategic mutual trust, enhance exchanges at all levels, and continue understanding and supporting each other on issues of major concern involving respective core interests. Both sides should take the joint building of the “Belt and Road” as the mainline, lead practical cooperation, focus on fighting against terrorism, promote law enforcement and security cooperation, and take the enhancement of bilateral friendship as the goal to deepen people-to-people and cultural exchanges and cooperation.
Xi Jinping pointed out that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear issue is an important outcome of multilateralism. The JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear issue is conducive to safeguarding peace and stability in the Middle East and international non-proliferation regime, which should continuously be implemented in an earnest manner. China has always advocated peaceful settlement for international disputes and hotspot issues. China is willing to strengthen cooperation with Iran within the multilateral framework to promote the building of a new type of international relations.
Hassan Rouhani congratulated on the successful conclusion of the SCO Qingdao Summit. President Xi Jinping’s visit to Iran two years ago has greatly elevated bilateral relations. Iran is glad to see the smooth development of bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership, and stands ready to deepen practical cooperation between the two countries in various fields, and well implement the cooperation agreement of the joint building of the “Belt and Road” between the two countries. At present, the existence and sustainability of the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear issue is facing challenges. Iran expects the international community including China to play a positive role in properly dealing with relevant issues.
After the talks, the two heads of state jointly witnessed the signing of relevant bilateral cooperation documents.
Ding Xuexiang, Yang Jiechi, Wang Yi, He Lifeng and others attended the meeting.
