From December 4 to 5, 2019, Vice Foreign Minister and G20 Sherpa of the Chinese side Ma Zhaoxu attended the first G20 Sherpa Meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Ma Zhaoxu said, the current world economic growth is sluggish and unilateralism, protectionism and bullying have seriously impacted the international economic and trade order and multilateral cooperation. The G20 is playing a more prominent role as a major forum for international economic cooperation. G20 members should practice multilateralism, oppose unilateralism and protectionism, lead the direction of world economic development, and create an open, fair and non-discriminatory innovation and competition environment. All members need to highlight development, speed up the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, ensure the steady momentum of international monetary and financial system reforms and keep to the direction of such momentum, and contribute to building an open world economy and improving global economic governance.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Ma Zhaoxu attended the coordination meeting of the BRICS countries and the coordination meeting of emerging markets. He also held bilateral meetings with G20 Sherpas of Saudi Arabia, Russia, the United Kingdom and Canada respectively.
The 15th G20 Summit will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from November 21 to 22, 2020. Saudi Arabia has taken over the presidency of G20 on December 1 this year, and the Sherpa Meeting this time officially launched the preparatory process for next year's summit.
