On February 22, 2025 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone call with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty at the latter's request, while returning to China after attending the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Johannesburg. The two sides had in-depth communication primarily focusing on regional situations.
Badr Abdelatty provided an update on the latest developments in the recent situation in Gaza, noting that Egypt is committed to promoting the full implementation of the agreement on the ceasefire in Gaza and is working with other Arab countries to formulate a reconstruction plan. He emphasized that Egypt opposes the forced displacement of the Palestinian people. China is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and the rotating president for February, and Arab countries highly value China's unique and important role and hope for China's support in restoring peace and rebuilding Gaza.
Wang Yi said that China is a friend of Arab countries and a comprehensive strategic partner of Egypt. He expressed China's support for the just position of Arab countries, opposition to the forced displacement of the Palestinian people, and expectation for the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire agreement. Gaza is part of Palestinian territory. Any future arrangement concerning Gaza must respect the will of the Palestinian people, and the post-conflict governance for Gaza should reflect the principle of "the Palestinians governing Palestine". It is high time to speed up the formulation of reconstruction and governance plans. China appreciates the hard work of Egypt and other Arab countries. Only by adhering to the two-State solution can the root causes be thoroughly resolved and lasting peace ultimately achieved.
The two sides also had an exchange of views on issues related to Sudan and Syria.
