From February 25 to 26, 2025, Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, upon invitation, attended the Opening Session of the Second ASEAN Future Forum held in Hanoi, Viet Nam, and delivered a speech under the topic "AI, Quantum Computing, and Beyond: Balancing Innovation and Regulation for Comprehensive Security".

Sun Weidong said, President Xi Jinping pointed out that science and technology (S&T) progress is a global and contemporary issue, and openness and cooperation are the only right way forward. The Chinese government has always participated in global governance for artificial intelligence (AI) with a highly responsible attitude from the perspective of improving human well-being and promoting global development, and actively advocated the concepts of AI for good, fairness and universal benefits, multilateralism and empowering development.

Sun Weidong stressed that on the issue of scientific and technological innovation, China and ASEAN share consistent concepts and a solid foundation for cooperation. China is ready to strengthen cooperation with ASEAN on AI governance principles and ethical regulations, and jointly promote the formation of an international consensus on the trusted, safe and responsible use of AI technology; implement the S&T Capacity Enhancing Initiative of AI Empowering Development, carry out joint research, deepen industrial synergy, and jointly incubate AI cooperation projects; actively promote the opening of open-sourced AI, strengthen training and exchanges in digital capacity building; deepen cooperation on law enforcement and security, work for solutions to problems in data security protection and electronic pollution, and maintain a clean and sustainable digital ecology and a harmonious and peaceful social environment.

On the sidelines of the forum, Sun Weidong also held bilateral meetings with Secretary-General of ASEAN Kao Kim Hourn and Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa.

The ASEAN Future Forum is a Track 1.5 platform for dialogue and exchange hosted by Viet Nam. The theme of this year's forum is "Building a United, Inclusive and Resilient ASEAN amidst Global Transformation".
