On April 27, 2025, Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong met with the visiting delegation of the ASEAN-China Joint Cooperation Committee.

Sun Weidong introduced the important achievements and significance of President Xi Jinping's visits to three Southeast Asian countries, expounded on the spirit of the Central Conference on Work Related to Neighboring Countries and China's principles in neighborhood diplomacy, and emphasized that China will continue to prioritize ASEAN in its neighborhood diplomacy and work for building a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future.

Sun Weidong elaborated on China's policy and position regarding the United States' abuse of tariffs, stating that the U.S. unilateralism and bullying acts disregard international rules and order, severely infringe upon the legitimate rights and interests of other countries, disrupt regional economic integration and the stability of industrial and supply chains, and undermine regional development momentum. In the face of hegemony and bullying, China has never compromised or yielded. If the United States wants to talk, China's door is wide open. But if it insists on a trade war, China will fight to the end. As ASEAN's largest trading partner and a representative of emerging markets, China is ready to work with ASEAN to strengthen unity and self-reliance, and jointly safeguard an open, inclusive and cooperative development environment as well as international fairness and justice, injecting more stability and certainty into the region and the world.

The members of the delegation appreciated China's consistent development of its relations with ASEAN based on equality, mutual respect, mutual trust and mutual benefit, and looked forward to sharing the development opportunities brought by Chinese modernization. Unilateral tariffs have put pressure on the region, and the close economic and trade ties between ASEAN and China form the foundation for both sides to jointly tackle challenges. ASEAN will uphold the rules of the World Trade Organization and the multilateral trading system, promote the development of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area 3.0, and implement the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. They expected China, as a responsible major country, to play a greater role in maintaining peace, stability and development in the region and the world.
