On the afternoon of October 13, 2025, Premier Li Qiang of the State Council met with Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Harini Amarasuriya, who is in China for the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women, at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.
Li Qiang said that China and Sri Lanka enjoy a deep traditional friendship. Over the 68 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the bilateral relationship has steadily developed, yielding fruitful outcomes in bilateral cooperation. In January this year, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake paid a state visit to China, during which President Xi Jinping held an important meeting with him and provided new strategic guidance for the development of bilateral relations. China attaches great importance to its relations with Sri Lanka in the neighborhood diplomacy and is ready to work with Sri Lanka to carry forward traditional friendship, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and strive to build a China-Sri Lanka community with a shared future to better benefit the two peoples.
Li Qiang pointed out that China is ready to seek greater synergy of development strategies with Sri Lanka. Within the framework of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, both sides should further expand bilateral trade and investment, advance the comprehensive development of key projects such as Colombo Port City and Hambantota Port, and explore cooperation in fields such as green development, digital economy, modern agriculture and marine economy to better achieve mutual benefit and win-win results. China is willing to import more high-quality products from Sri Lanka and will continue to encourage capable Chinese enterprises to invest in Sri Lanka. The two sides should deepen exchanges and cooperation on education, culture, tourism, women, and at the sub-national level. China is ready to work with Sri Lanka to implement the Global Governance Initiative, strengthen communication and coordination within the United Nations and other mechanisms, encourage all to practice true multilateralism, and safeguard international fairness and justice.
Harini Amarasuriya said that President Xi Jinping's important address at the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women has played a guiding role in advancing the global cause of women's development, which Sri Lanka highly appreciates. Sri Lanka-China relations have a long history and have yielded fruitful cooperation outcomes. Sri Lanka firmly supports the one-China principle and recognizes Taiwan, Xizang, and Xinjiang as inseparable parts of China's territory. The Sri Lankan government attaches great importance to its relations with China and is grateful for China's valuable support for Sri Lanka's economic and social development. Sri Lanka firmly supports the Belt and Road Initiative and the Global Governance Initiative put forth by President Xi Jinping, and looks forward to working with China to further strengthen exchanges at all levels, deepen cooperation in investment, ports, infrastructure, agriculture, textile industry, poverty reduction, digital economy and other fields, promote education, youth, and other people-to-people exchanges, enhance multilateral collaboration, and advance Sri Lanka-China relations to a higher level.
