Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming Meets Newly Appointed Russian Ambassador to China Igor Morgulov

On 14 November 2022, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming met with newly appointed Russian Ambassador to China Igor Morgulov.

Liu Xiaoming welcomed Igor Morgulov for assuming his new post in China, and briefed him on the major outcomes and significance of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Liu said that the National Congress has laid out a top-level and systematic blueprint for China’s diplomacy in the new era, including the direction and pathway for resolving  sensitive regional and international issues. 

Morgulov extended congratulations on the success of the 20th CPC National Congress, and expressed Russia’s readiness to continue enhancing cooperation with China on issues such as the Korean Peninsula to further deepen the Russia-China comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era.

Recognizing the sound cooperation between China and Russia on the Korean Peninsula issue, the two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on the recent developments on the Peninsula and agreed that it serves the common interests of the region and the international community to maintain peace and stability on the Peninsula and prevent a spiral of escalation. Liu and Morgulov expressed hope that relevant parties can squarely recognize how the situation on the Peninsula has come to what it is today as well as the crux of the problem, and meet each other halfway to address one another’s legitimate concerns in a balanced manner through meaningful dialogue. The two sides agreed to keep in close communication and coordination both bilaterally and multilaterally so as to promote the political settlement of the Peninsula issue.
