On 22 November 2022, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming had a meeting with British Ambassador to China Caroline Wilson at the request of the latter. The two sides exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula issue.

Liu Xiaoming briefed Ambassador Wilson on the major outcomes and significance of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and elaborated on China’s positions on the Korean Peninsula issue. He underscored that the situation on the Peninsula has come to what it is today for a reason, and that confrontation and pressure campaign will not help solve the problem. The parties concerned should stay cool-headed and exercise restraint to prevent a spiral of escalation. In the meantime, it is important to address one another’s legitimate concerns in a balanced manner based on the dual-track approach and the principle of taking phased and synchronized actions. China’s position on the Korean Peninsula issue has not changed. China will continue to actively promote peace and dialogue in light of the merits of the issue and play a constructive role in advancing the political settlement of the Peninsula issue.

Ambassador Wilson shared Britain’s views on the recent developments on the Korean Peninsula and expressed UK’s readiness to maintain communication with China on the Peninsula issue.
