Director-General of the Department of African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Wu Peng Attends the Roundtable on Conducting Cooperation on Infrastructure Projects between China and the East African Region

2022-11-25 22:50

On November 25, 2022, Director-General of the Department of African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Wu Peng attended and addressed the roundtable on how to promote cooperation on regional infrastructure projects between China and the East African region under African Union (AU)'s Program Infrastructure Development for Africa (PIDA) via video link.

Wu Peng said that the East African region is highly integrated. With profound political mutual trust, the East African region and China share broad prospects for cooperation. China is ready to work with East African countries to accelerate the implementation of a development framework of "two axes plus two coasts" proposed by State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, explore new models of financing infrastructure projects, seek greater synergy in industrial development, enhance cooperation in production capacity, and advance smart cities, 5G and other new infrastructure facilities, to strengthen sustained development of the countries in the region. China is always open to cooperation in the field of infrastructure development, and hopes that the international community will work in solidarity and coordination to help the East African region embark on a path to stronger revitalization and prosperity.

Wu Peng actively introduced the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, noting that with no previous example or path available to follow, China has succeeded in pursuing a model of sound development featuring improved production, higher living standards, and healthy ecosystems, scotching the myth that only the western capitalist path leads to modernization. China always believes that modernization is not westernization and westernization does not necessarily bring about modernization. China will continue to promote high-quality development, speed up the formation of a new development paradigm, firmly expand opening-up, and work with African countries to carry forward the spirit of China-Africa friendship and cooperation and accelerate the building of a China-Africa community with a shared future in the new era.

The roundtable, co-hosted by the AU Representative Office in China and Development Reimagined, aims to provide suggestions for China to participate in PIDA projects in the East African region. Ambassador Rahamtalla M. Osman, Permanent Representative of the AU to China, CEO of Development Reimagined Hannah Ryder, diplomatic envoys or senior diplomats of Eastern African countries to China, and representatives from such institutions as subsidiary agencies of the AU as well as Chinese enterprises and chambers of commerce were present online.
