On October 9, 2023, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with the bipartisan delegation of the U.S. Senate led by Majority Leader Charles Schumer in Beijing.
Wang Yi welcomed the delegation led by Schumer to China for face-to-face exchanges, and expressed the hope that the senators will gain a better understanding of China, view China in a more objective light, manage differences between the two sides in a more rational way, and play a constructive role in bringing China-U.S. relations back on the track of sound development. Noting that China and the United States differ in the social system, history, culture, and development stage, Wang Yi said China will by no means become the United States, and neither will the United States become China. Therefore, both sides should respect their respective people's choice of development path, and respect each other's core interests and development rights. The three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation proposed by President Xi Jinping are the true reflection of China-U.S. relations withstanding twists and turns over the past 50 years and also the correct way for major countries to get along in the new era.
Wang Yi said that the world today is in a period of turbulence and transformation. While the Ukraine crisis continues unabated, conflicts have flared up in the Middle East, and the earthquake in Afghanistan has taken the lives of thousands of people. These challenges require the international community to respond together, and China and the United States should also play their due role. The two sides have recently conducted a series of important dialogues and exchanges, which have been widely welcomed by various circles in both countries and the international community. These are full evidence that stabilizing China-U.S. relations from further deterioration is the right thing to do and conforms to the common interests of both countries and the world. Both sides should earnestly implement the important common understandings reached by the two heads of state in Bali, and strive to stabilize and improve China-U.S. relations to deliver benefits to both countries and the world.
Schumer and other senators briefed the Chinese side on relevant views of the U.S. side, saying that they are ready to enhance engagement and dialogue with China in a candid manner based on mutual respect, responsibly manage differences, and avoid conflicts. The United States does not seek to decouple from China. The stable development of U.S.-China relations is beneficial to the United States and the world. Noting that the dialogue between the two sides is very helpful, they expressed the hope that it will continue.
Wang Yi specifically briefed the U.S. delegation on China's position on the Taiwan question, the Ukraine crisis, and the Palestine-Israel conflict, among other issues.
