Wang Yi Has a Phone Call with ROK Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yul

On December 24, 2024, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi has a phone call with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Cho Tae-yul at the latter's request.

Noting that China and the ROK are friendly neighbors and important cooperative partners, Wang Yi said that with the joint efforts of both sides, China-ROK relations have recently shown a momentum of improvement and development, which serves the interests of the two peoples. China is ready to work with the ROK to uphold the original aspiration of establishing diplomatic relations, and adhere to the path of good neighborliness and friendship. Following the principle of mutual benefit, China will also work with the ROK to continue making good use of bilateral dialogue and cooperation mechanisms in various fields, strengthen interactions at all levels and people-to-people exchanges, enhance mutual understanding and trust, and promote sound and steady development of the China-ROK strategic cooperative partnership. China has taken note of recent changes in the domestic situation in the ROK. China adheres to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs and believes that the ROK people have the wisdom and capability to properly handle domestic issues.

Wang Yi said that despite the rise of protectionism and unilateralism, trade between China and the ROK continues to expand, with the interests of the two countries further converging, which shows that bilateral economic and trade cooperation has a solid foundation and broad space for development. China welcomes ROK companies to further explore the Chinese market and increase investment in China. China is ready to strengthen coordination with the ROK side to jointly keep global industrial and supply chains stable and unimpeded.

Cho Tae-yul said, the ROK cherishes the current sound momentum of bilateral relations and remains unchanged in its position of promoting the sustainable development of the ROK-China strategic cooperative partnership. The ROK is ready to work with China to strengthen strategic communication, increase high-level interactions and exchanges in various fields, and take more measures to facilitate personnel exchanges between the two countries. The ROK is satisfied with the continuous expansion of bilateral economic and trade cooperation, and looks forward to more mutually beneficial outcomes to inject more momentum into the well-being of the two peoples.

The two sides agreed that China-Japan-ROK cooperation is conducive to the respective development of the three countries and regional peace, stability and prosperity, and will work together to fortify trilateral cooperation.

The two sides had an exchange of views on cooperation within multilateral frameworks such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). China supports the ROK in hosting the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting next year, for which the ROK appreciates and looks forward to enhancing communication and coordination with China.

The two sides also had an exchange of views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula. Wang Yi stressed that China always advocates resolving the Korean Peninsula issue through dialogue and consultation and will continue to play a constructive role in promoting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
