On February 18, 2025 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi made remarks to the media after chairing the United Nations (U.N.) Security Council high-level meeting themed "Practicing Multilateralism, Reforming and Improving Global Governance".
Wang Yi said, this year marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. At present, the world faces unprecedented challenges and risks, and global governance is at a crossroad. As the rotating President of the U.N. Security Council for February, China proposed holding a Security Council high-level meeting for a discussion on "Practicing Multilateralism, Reforming and Improving Global Governance" with the aim of encouraging all parties to renew the founding purposes of the United Nations, building consensus on multilateralism, and injecting new impetus into strengthening global governance.
Wang Yi said, China's proposal has received positive responses from all parties, and more than 100 countries registered for the meeting. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reported at the meeting that foreign ministers and high-level representatives from many countries made special trips to New York to attend the meeting. At the meeting, China put forward four proposals for revitalizing multilateralism and building a fair and equitable global governance system. The meeting saw lively discussion. Wang Yi summarized the consensus reached by all parties:
First, the role of the United Nations is indispensable. After 80 years of trials and challenges, the United Nations remains the most representative and authoritative intergovernmental international organization, serving as the core mechanism for achieving global peace and development. Under the current situation, the U.N.'s role must not be weakened but strengthened, and its status must be upheld, not replaced.
Second, the trend of multilateralism is irreversible. Unilateralism and protectionism are unpopular. All countries should support a multilateral system with the United Nations at its core, adhere to the basic norms of international relations based on the purposes of the U.N. Charter, promote the concept of multilateralism, and revive the spirit of multilateralism.
Third, the trend of unity and progress is unstoppable. Countries are interdependent and share a common future; no country can prosper alone, nor should the strong bully the weak, let alone a return to the "law of the jungle". Unity and cooperation beat division and confrontation. Only in this way can all countries achieve win-win results, and the world realize peace and development.
Fourth, reforming and improving global governance cannot be delayed. Building a fair and equitable global governance system is a universal expectation of the international community and an effective way to address global challenges. It is necessary to adapt to the new changes in the international political and economic landscape, enhance the representation of the Global South, and strike a balance in the reforms that reflect the wishes and interests of the majority of countries.
Wang Yi emphasized that the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind, as well as the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative put forth by President Xi Jinping, are China's responses to the question posed by the times and contribute Chinese wisdom to the reform and improvement of global governance. No matter how the international situation evolves, China will continue to uphold practicing multilateralism, defend the vision of the United Nations, and firmly safeguard the authority of the United Nations. China is ready to work with all countries for a better future.
