On May 22, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Beijing with Foreign Minister of the Netherlands Caspar Veldkamp. The two sides reached six common understandings based on a comprehensive and in-depth exchange of views.
First, both sides agreed to maintain close exchanges, deepen practical cooperation in areas such as economy and trade, science and technology, agriculture, and water conservancy, expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and promote the steady and sound development of the open and pragmatic partnership for comprehensive cooperation between China and the Netherlands.
Second, both sides discussed concerns over bilateral trade and agreed to maintain close communication through existing channels on cooperation in various fields, including semiconductor technology.
Third, both sides reaffirmed their support for multilateralism, respect for the international system with the United Nations (UN) at its core and basic norms governing international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and commitment to upholding these norms and principles in the process of UN reform and to promoting the effective fulfillment of the UN's mandate. Both sides pledged to safeguard the UN Charter, international law, and the three pillars of the United Nations, namely peace and security, development, and human rights.
Fourth, both sides pledged to uphold free trade and the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core. Both sides emphasized the importance of rules-based and open trade as well as a global level playing field, and underscored the contribution of trade to economic growth.
Fifth, both sides are partners in climate cooperation and are committed to taking climate action and sustainably utilizing energy resources based on the best available scientific evidence and the different national circumstances, to minimize negative impacts on humanity and the environment. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, the two sides pledged to continue close cooperation to promote the full and comprehensive implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its Paris Agreement in good faith and effectively, strive for positive outcomes at the 30th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP30), and enhance exchanges and cooperation in areas such as climate adaptation and green transition.
Sixth, achieving equal rights for all, especially for women and girls, requires significant action on a global scale. The two sides reaffirmed their joint efforts to realize this goal. The international conference to be held in Beijing in the second half of this year is of great significance, and the two sides will conduct further discussions on relevant cooperation.
