Wang Yi Meets with Swiss Federal Councillor and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis

On the afternoon of May 30, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Hong Kong with Swiss Federal Councillor and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, who attended the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed).

Wang Yi said that Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis's special trip to Hong Kong to attend the event demonstrated both his personal and Switzerland's support for the establishment of the IOMed. It also reflected Switzerland's positive attitude as a neutral country in practicing multilateralism and supporting the resolution of differences through dialogue and consultation. The Chinese side commends Switzerland for leveraging its role as a "bridge-builder" in international affairs and looks forward to working with the Swiss side to enhance communication, collaboration and experience sharing in areas such as dispute resolution through the new platform of the IOMed. Efforts should be made to ensure the successful development and operation of the IOMed, the first intergovernmental organization specialized in mediation, enabling it to interact and reinforce mutually with arbitration and judiciary, while jointly practicing multilateralism and upholding international fairness and justice.

Wang Yi said that the successful practice of "One Country, Two Systems" in Hong Kong has effectively promoted social stability and economic development in the region. He expressed the hope that Switzerland will deepen exchanges and cooperation with Hong Kong across various fields to achieve mutual benefits and win-win outcomes. Wang Yi also introduced the recent high-level meeting on economic and trade affairs between China and the United States in Geneva and expressed appreciation for the facilitation provided by Switzerland.

Ignazio Cassis extended congratulations on the successful signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the IOMed, describing it as a significant step toward resolving differences through mediation and a new area of cooperation between Switzerland and China. He said that today's world is full of uncertainties and called for a greater role from China. Switzerland is honored to contribute to the China-U.S. high-level meeting on economic and trade affairs in Geneva, and is willing to maintain a positive approach toward China and advance Switzerland-China relations by taking the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries as an opportunity.

The two sides also had an exchange of views on international and regional issues such as the Iranian nuclear issue and the Ukraine crisis.
