On the afternoon of May 30, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Hong Kong with Lao Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, who attended the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed).
Wang Yi noted their joint attendance at the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the IOMed in the morning. Laos has actively participated in the establishment of the IOMed and is among the first to sign the Convention, making significant contributions, which China appreciates. The establishment of the IOMed aligns with the trend of the times and conforms to the spirit of the United Nations Charter. It has explored new paths and built a new platform for resolving international disputes and maintaining peace and stability. Wang Yi expressed the belief that Laos will continue playing an active role in facilitating the early entry into force of the Convention and promoting the effective functioning of the IOMed.
Wang Yi said that China and Laos, sharing common ideals and standing together through thick and thin, always treat each other with sincerity and offer mutual support. Under the strategic guidance of General Secretary and President Xi Jinping and General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith, the building of the China-Laos community with a shared future has steadily advanced, demonstrating the broad prospects of the development of relations between the two Parties and two countries. China is ready to work with Laos, focusing on implementing the important common understandings reached by the top leaders of the two Parties and two countries, to deepen strategic cooperation, foster new drivers of cooperation, enhance coordination and collaboration at both bilateral and multilateral levels, jointly resist unilateralism and bullying acts, uphold multilateralism and international fairness and justice, and advance the China-Laos community with a shared future to a higher level.
Saleumxay Kommasith extended congratulations on the successful signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the IOMed, saying that mediation reflects the cultural characteristics of Asia and is a preferred approach for many developing countries in resolving disputes. He expressed confidence that the IOMed will attract more countries to join and play an important role in promoting regional peace and security. The Lao side expressed appreciation for China's long-standing and firm support, and expressed the willingness to implement the important common understandings reached by the top leaders of the two Parties and two countries, strengthen exchanges at all levels, advance cooperation projects such as the Laos-China-Thailand Railway, and work for more outcomes in building the Laos-China community with a shared future.
