On the evening of May 30, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Hong Kong with Mauritanian Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, who attended the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed).

Wang Yi noted, it is the common aspiration of all countries to properly resolve disputes through dialogue and consultation, which is an important background for the establishment of the IOMed. Mediation works when all parties accept it willingly and it is conducive to developing countries, especially small- and medium-sized ones, in better safeguarding their legitimate interests.

Wang Yi said, this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Mauritania. Over the past 60 years, the two sides have always treated each other with mutual respect and equality, setting an example of mutual support, mutual benefit and win-win results between developing countries. During the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in September last year, President Xi Jinping and President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani jointly announced the establishment of a strategic partnership, charting the course for the development of bilateral relations. China is ready to work with Mauritania to fully deliver on the important common understandings reached between the two heads of state, carry forward the traditional friendship, consolidate unity and cooperation, jointly maintain peace and stability in the Sahel region, and constantly create new prospects for the development of the China-Mauritania strategic partnership.

Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug extended congratulations on the successful signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the IOMed, and said that he looks forward to the IOMed playing an important role in safeguarding international peace and security. The friendly relations between Mauritania and China are solid. China is a true strategic partner of Mauritania. Mauritania remains firmly committed to the one-China policy, and upholds that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. Mauritania is ready to work with China to jointly celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, enhance exchanges at all levels, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and promote the continuous development of bilateral relations.
