On June 24, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan in Beijing.
Wang Yi said that President Xi Jinping has just held a fruitful meeting with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, during which both sides expressed the willingness to continue carrying forward the traditional friendship between China and Singapore and to constantly explore new prospects for the development of bilateral relations. The Chinese side appreciates Singapore's reaffirmation of its commitment to the one-China principle and opposition to "Taiwan independence." China is willing to take the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Singapore as an opportunity to follow through on the important common understandings reached by the leaders of the two countries and the outcomes of the visit, promote new and greater development of the all-round high-quality future-oriented partnership between China and Singapore, and make due contributions of both countries to regional peace and stability.
Wang Yi stated that in the face of the major changes unseen in a century, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, China steadfastly fulfills its responsibilities as a major country, stands on the right side of history, upholds the universally recognized norms governing international relations, and defends international fairness and justice. The world is inevitably moving towards multipolarity, a trend that cannot be stopped. In terms of peace and security, China has the best record among major countries. China never plans, participates in, or initiates wars, nor does it engage in proxy wars. China will continue to hold high the banner of multilateralism, work together with the international community to resolutely resist unilateralism and bullying acts, firmly oppose power politics, decisively stop the law of the jungle, and promote the building of an equal and orderly multipolar world. China stands ready to work with Southeast Asian countries, including Singapore, to build a shared home for China and ASEAN and to jointly advance the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
Vivian Balakrishnan said that Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's decision to make China his first visit outside ASEAN after taking office holds unique and significant importance. Singapore and China share close ties and a long history of exchanges. The success of bilateral relations is rooted in mutual respect and trust, as well as a long-term perspective. The Singaporean side will continue to firmly uphold the one-China policy, oppose "Taiwan independence," and will not allow Singapore to be used by "Taiwan independence" forces. Singapore is ready to work with China, with a forward-looking strategic vision, to seize opportunities brought by the development of emerging technologies and deepen cooperation in various fields such as economy, trade, investment and connectivity. Facing the current complex geopolitical challenges, Singapore will work with other ASEAN countries and China to uphold openness and inclusiveness, defend multilateralism, share cooperation opportunities, and jointly address global challenges.
