On June 25, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a group meeting in Beijing with diplomatic envoys from the European Union (EU) and its member states to China.

Wang Yi noted that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the EU. Today's world is undergoing tremendous changes at an accelerated pace. China and the EU, as two major constructive forces in the world, have both the responsibility and the capability to contribute valuable stability and certainty to a world intertwined with turbulence and transformation. The two sides should take stock of the valuable experience gained over the past five decades of China-EU relations, clarify their respective responsibilities, direction of efforts, and common goals, enhance mutual trust, properly handle differences, pool strengths, and work together to elevate the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership to a new level.

Wang Yi put forward three suggestions for the future development of China-EU relations. First, the two sides should uphold mutual respect, in particular, earnestly respect each other's core interests and concerns. China and the EU differ in social systems and governance models, but both are founded on their respective histories and cultural traditions. The path of socialism with Chinese characteristics has achieved remarkable success and shows bright prospects, serving as an important driving force for the development and progress of all humanity. Realizing complete national reunification is the long-cherished aspiration and historical mission of the Chinese nation. China will never allow the Taiwan region to be separated from the motherland. Wang Yi expressed the hope that the EU will continue to firmly uphold the one-China principle and oppose all forms of "Taiwan independence". Second, the two sides should stay committed to the positioning of their partnership. The development of China-EU relations over the past 50 years has proved that China and the EU are partners, not rivals, still less enemies. There is no territorial dispute, no geopolitical conflict, nor any fundamental conflict of interests between the two sides. China has always viewed its relations with the EU from a strategic and long-term perspective, and hopes that the EU will work with China in the same direction to ensure that cooperation remains the underlying feature of China-EU relations. Third, the two sides should jointly uphold multilateralism. Currently, unilateralism and bullying actions are undermining international peace and security, and the international rules and order established over the 80 years since the end of World War II are facing serious disruption. China remains committed to safeguarding the international system with the United Nations (U.N.) at its core, the international order underpinned by international law, and the basic norms governing international relations based on the purposes and principles of the U.N. Charter. In addressing hotspot issues, China stays committed to promoting talks for peace, opposes the use of force, and advocates for greater democracy in international relations. The three global initiatives, the Belt and Road Initiative, and notably, the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind, all put forth by President Xi Jinping, have contributed Chinese wisdom and solutions to the international community. China and the EU should follow the trend of the times, enhance understanding, build mutual trust, help each other succeed, and bring benefits to the world.

The head of the EU delegation to China and diplomatic envoys from EU member states to China stated that the EU side highly commends the development of EU-China relations over the past 50 years, appreciates China's development achievements, and values China's important role in the international arena. China has always been an important cooperative partner of the EU. The EU is willing to work hand in hand with China for the future, develop a constructive and stable EU-China relationship, jointly respond to global challenges, strengthen communication and coordination on regional hotspot issues, uphold multilateralism, and promote world peace and security. They extended their wishes for the success of the new round of China-EU Summit.

Wang Yi also briefed the EU diplomatic envoys on China's positions on international and regional issues including the Ukraine crisis, the Israel-Iran conflict, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and climate change, and listened to the views of the EU member states.
