On August 14, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Lao Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane, who is in China to attend the tenth Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Foreign Ministers' Meeting, in Anning, Yunnan.
Wang Yi said that as comrades and brothers, China and Laos have always supported each other on issues concerning their respective core interests, and the building of a China-Laos community with a shared future has stayed at the forefront of the times. China supports the Lao People's Revolutionary Party in successfully holding its 12th National Congress and planning the next-stage development of the party and the country. China is willing to work with Laos to implement the important common understandings reached by the top leaders of the two parties and two countries, strengthen strategic communication, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and jointly organize the celebration of the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations next year, so that the traditional friendship between China and Laos will continue to gain new vitality. Both sides should speed up the upgrading of the China-Laos Railway, promote the implementation of the vision of interconnected development of China, Laos and Thailand, and contribute to the development of Laos and regional connectivity. China is ready to share the benefits of its super-sized market with Laos, encourage more Chinese enterprises to invest in Laos, safeguard the security and stability of industrial and supply chains, and work with Laos to resist economic bullying and coercion.
Wang Yi pointed out that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. China and Laos should work together with other peace-loving countries to promote a correct view of history, uphold true multilateralism, oppose hegemonism, power politics and unilateralism, firmly safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core and the international order underpinned by international law, and inject greater certainty into the complex and volatile international landscape. China welcomes Laos' joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) family and looks forward to Laos contributing to the development of the SCO.
Thongsavanh Phomvihane stated that the friendship between Laos and China has a long history, and the two countries are good neighbors, good friends, good comrades, and good partners. The Lao party and government attach great importance to developing relations with China, and hope to strengthen strategic communication, deepen cooperation in various fields, and work for in-depth and substantive progress in the building of a Laos-China community with a shared future. The China-Laos Railway is an important project under the Belt and Road cooperation, which has effectively promoted bilateral trade and personnel exchanges. The Lao side is willing to accelerate the implementation of "juxtaposed border control" to enable the China-Laos Railway to play a greater role. Thongsavanh Phomvihane thanked the Chinese side for supporting Laos in becoming a dialogue partner of the SCO, and looked forward to attending the Tianjin Summit in China. Laos is willing to maintain close communication and coordination with China to jointly safeguard international fairness and justice.
